  (Registration includes canoe, paddles, lifejackets and instruction)

  • A canoe is a great way to take the family (including smaller kids) onto an affordable weekend adventure. The Philadelphia area offers many opportunities to enjoy rivers and lakes, be active, out in nature, and share time as a family. This introductory class offered by the Philadelphia Canoe Club will get your family on the water in a safe and fun way.
    
    The program will begin on Friday Evening 6-8 p.m. providing a meet and greet time with instructors and families and preparation for Saturday's trip in the NJ Pine Barrens. We will discuss safety on and off the water, what to wear, and things to bring on Saturday's trip. 
    
    Learn:

  • Fundamental boat safety and proper use of gear

  • How to pack a canoe, keep gear dry, and in the boat

  • How to get in and out of a canoe

  • Confidently paddle a canoe using basic stokes and techniques. 

  • Water reading and basic river features.

  PCC will transport canoes and gear to the Pine Barrens on Saturday, July 18 Students are responsible for their own transportation.

  RECREATIONAL KAYAKING - July 18 & 19, 2026

  No experience necessary. This course is designed for students with little or no formal kayak training.

  Please note: be prepared to get wet, you will be in the water for some of the safety exercises. 

  Day 1:

  Location: On-the-water class at the Canoe Club.

  Your lesson will include basic strokes, safety and rescue on flat and gently moving water. You will learn how to safely and easily get back into your kayak should you tip over and how to help your companions.

  Day 2:

  Location: NJ Pine Barrens

  You will practice your skills from day one in the morning on the lake. The afternoon session on the river includes water reading and river features. You will practice controlling your kayak in faster currents and around river bends and turns.

  Two-Day Class: $235

  All level paddlers (canoe or kayak - novice or skilled) - may participate to review rescue skills and learn new ones.

  Skills to be reviewed and taught: 

  1. Getting back in your boat in open water

  2. Rope skills - throwing and Z drags

  3. Cold water awareness and clothing - what to do/not to do

  4. Review of first aid essentials

  5. Equipment discussion, throw ropes, spare paddles, extra clothes.

  There will be a short classroom time but will spend most of the time in the water.

  Canoe Clinic # 5: Basic Rescue Techniques (5:30 - 7:30 pm)

  Class will be held on the Schuylkill River at the club.  The clinic will cover basic rescue techniques that every canoeist should know for personal and group safety. You will learn how to rescue a capsized canoe and assist paddlers with their re-entry into the boat.  You will also learn to use throw bags. (Bring your throw bag if you have one). 

  Be prepared to get wet, you will be in the water. Protect your feet, especially your toes, wear secure footwear. Closed water shoes or sneakers a must, no sandals, flip flops or crocs. Helmets required, the club will provide them if you don't have one.

  You may choose a flatwater, whitewater or tandem canoe. Also, bring your own. 

  Attendance is limited. If you need to cancel please let me know so another person may attend. Thank you.

  Our Thursday evenings paddles offer an opportunity to paddle recreational kayaks out of the Philadelphia Canoe Club. 

  We start at 5:30, However, we ask you arrive at least 15-20 minutes early for a pre-paddle preparations.

  Club membership is not required. Boats, paddles, and life jackets will be available at the Canoe Club! 

  These paddles are a great opportunity to learn more about kayaking with PCC and explore the river.

  COSTS

  Non- Members  $30 

  PCC members- without ACA membership/ACA Insurance - $10

  PCC member with active ACA membership/ACA Insurance - No charge

  Things to know! 

  You are allowed you to bring your own equipment, but it must be inspected to meet Coast Guard Standards for safety. 

  Please bring cash or check - we can not accept digital payments or credit cards. Sorry ! 

  Pre-registration required to gain a headcount and a waiting list.   

  Alcohol or drugs are not permitted at any time during the event ! We take water safety very seriously. 

  Fees and waivers will be collected at the event.

  There is always the chance you may get wet. We recommend comfortable athletic attire or bathing suit. ABSOLUTELY NO COTTON CLOTHING!  Bringing a towel and a change of clothes.

  Ottawa River, August 9-16

  The Ottawa river is the premier whitewater play destination in the northeast.  The river features friendly, BIG class III/IV rapids with amazing play features.  Many of the play moves used by pro boaters were invented here.  The water in August is warm while the air is often in the 80's with low humidity.  We camp at OWL rafting and paddle one of the two sections of the river each day, sometimes making multiple runs in a day.  The atmosphere is laid back, many paddlers stay the entire week while others come for only a few days.  A reliable roll and a playboat are the only major requirements for this trip.  There are play features to suit every skill level of paddler, from advanced novices to hardcore playboaters.  There is good play at all river levels, but from experience I'd say the ideal levels are from +1 to -3, and again from +11 and up.  Typically the levels in mid August are nearly perfect ( +1 to -3) but levels vary every year so check http://www.owl-mkc.ca/owl_gauge.htm for the latest readings.
