Trip, Great Egg Harbor River, Piney Hollow Road to Route 54 , Moving Water (28 Apr 2026)

Paddle the attractive tea-colored waters of this beautiful undeveloped pine barrens river. Boats 13’ or less are recommended. Good boat control skills are necessary to maneuver around obstacles and the sharp twists and turns in the river. The time on the water for this 4 mile paddle is approximately 4 hours. We will take a break and eat lunch along the way. The Great Egg River is approximately 55 minutes from the Philadelphia Canoe Club

Meet at Piney Hollow Road , Williamstown, NJ. Coordinates: 39.62044579539091, -74.89278417521568. We will drop off the boats and leave participants there to look over them while we shuttle our cars to Route 54.

Take Out: Route 54, Folsum, NJ, .4 miles North of Route 322. Coordinates: 39.59503609404531, -74.85097407954504. At the end of the trip, we will use the vehicles left at Route 54 to take drivers back to Piney Hollow Road to get their vehicles and get everybody and their boats back together.

To Go On This Trip: Click "REGISTER" and complete the registration Information. Participants must have completed an American Canoe Association (ACA) Waiver. ACA Members must complete a paper waiver the morning of the trip if you have not previousoly completed one on a 2026 trip. You will need your ACA membership number to complete the waiver. Individuals who are not ACA members must complete a 1 day event membership waiver and pay $10 cash the morning of the trip.

Requirements:

Transportation of your boat and gear to the trip location.

Wear a PFD while on the water and you should have a whistle.
Wear quick drying clothes suitable for getting wet. If the weather is cool dress in layers and have a set of dry clothes with you in the boat.
Have a set of dry clothes with you in the boat.
Protect your toes, wear water or close-toed shoes.

Suggestions (for your comfort):

Bring water to drink and a lunch.
Bring a dry bag or waterproof container for your personal belongings/extra clothes.
Have a secure place to carry your car keys.
Have a set of dry clothes in your car if you want to change for the ride home.

CHEAT RIVER FESTIVAL is the greatest whitewater festival of the year that isn't called Gauleyfest. Some even prefer it's laid back, family friendly atmosphere. The event kicks off with a mass start race at 5pm on friday. On saturday their are opportunities to paddle the Cheat, Upper Yough, and often the Lower Big Sandy and Top Yough. The Cheat is located just north of Albright, WV on route 26. There will be live music, tons of food, vendors and of course paddling.

This class does not replace the need for on-water skills instruction but will help decide what paddle-sport(s) you want to focus on and prepare you to get to the water. Our instructors will also help you identify the PCC Training Classes you might want to enroll in to build your paddling skills this summer.

The stony is a super fun play river that is similar in difficulty to the Tohickon. Stonycreek Rendevous is at Stony Creek near Johnstown, PA. There is camping right on the river with a play wave that remains lit all night long. The character of the Stonycreek River, often referred to as the Stony, is difficult to describe when it comes to size. As its name implies, it can be considered both creek and river. The answer is a little of both - hybrid large creek and small river. The Stony is a play-boater’s dream, yet still offers everyone a fun time. At low to medium water levels, this is primarily a class III run. At medium to high levels the intensity and continuousness of the run picks up dramatically and steps up a notch in difficulty. Most of the rapids are a combination of continuous ledges coming at you from different angles and can be run using different lines. A few of the rapids have large boulders thrown in to spice things up.

For the most part, there are only a couple somewhat serious hazards on the river at normal water levels / conditions. However, as with any stream, situations can change overnight, so caution should never be thrown to the wind. One of these hazards has been somewhat underrated, while the other has been somewhat overrated. Both of these obstructions are not natural to the river, rather man-made structures that pose a threat. The underrated hazard is the river-wide dam (Border Dam) that you must walk around on river left. You will know when you get there due to a large building on river right. The "spill-way" is river-wide. The overrated hazard is directly below this dam where a pipeline crosses the river, creating a large hydraulic. This overrating stems from a canoeing book reference long ago. There is an easy tongue to run on river left that will keep you out of the maw. However, several people paddle through the hydraulic on a regular basis (at very low levels) and seem to have no problem. It is recommended to scout this far river right if not familiar.

There are great play spots along the whole river (keep your eyes open), but the majority of them are within the first three miles or so. The playing only gets better as the level rises! From the get-go, there are plenty of eddy lines, small to medium surfing waves, and holes. The first major rapid, known as Johnsons Hole, is jam packed with play spots and has been loosely referred to as the “Surf Laboratory". From the beginning of Test Tube Hole down to an overhead railroad bridge, there are 10-15 nice play spots depending on the water level. This rapid is 1/4 mile below where Shade Creek enters the Stony on river right. Next comes Lower Railroad Rapid. This rapid is just downstream of the railroad bridge. The rapid begins with a long slide that ends with a nice haystack wave. Immediately after this comes the locomotive. This is a ledge that stretches nearly across the width of the river. At mid to high levels, the ledge transforms into a hole that is mean and can reach the size of a large locomotive. The hole can be easily avoided on river right. 3 to 5 great surfing waves usually form over the next 100 yards. The next rapid is called The Wall. This will be easily identified when the river makes a hard drop to the right and a shear slope is on your left. Soon after The Wall you will enter a succession of rapids named the three sisters.... wonderful surfing at medium to high levels. The third sister is a near river wide hydraulic than can be enjoyed at low levels also. There have been many boats in the hole (up to 9) at the same time on numerous occasions. The river will eventually bottleneck into a hole named Scout on river right. A play boater’s dream at low to medium levels. The abundance of play spots continues for at least half of the run (too many to mention) until Border Dam. Although the Stony calms down a little after Border Dam, don’t put on the blinders, as there are some very nice waves and holes that you might miss if you don’t keep alert. The scenery is also spectacular along the way. Some other notable rapids on the Stony are Rooster Tail, Hydro, Beast, Hermit, Dislocation, Last Rapid and Showers. Showers the first real rapid of the Stony Canyonsection can be run by putting in at Hollsopple, or just up stream of the bridge in Foustwell.

This five mile run can take as long as four to six hours if you play like some of the locals, or as short as 1.5 hours if you aren't messing around too much. Though improving significantly, the water quality of the Stony has a long way to go, as abandoned mine drainage (AMD) is a serious problem in the area. The Stony's water quality continues to improve due to the diligent work of the Stonycreek Conemaugh River Improvement Project, as well as other grass-roots organizations in the region.

Runnable Levels and Gauge Information

The Stonycreek River has a minimum runable level of approximately 3.0 using the USGS gauge at Ferndale. This corresponds to a flow of around 450 cfs. The Stony Canyon gauge is painted on the center pier of the State Route 601 bridge in Foustwell and must be read at the site. 1.4 is a minimum on this gauge. The correlation between the USGS Ferndale gauge and the Stony Canyon gauge is USGS Ferndale minus 1.5 to 1.75 feet. The Stony is a great intermediate Class III run up to 3.5 feet on the on the Stony Canyon gauge. From 3.5 to 5.0, it is a solid Class III-IV continuous run. Above 5.0 is big and powerful with no large pools. Running it at 10-13 feet is absolutely huge (large risk). Please…exercise caution and be safe.

Shuttle:

Put in at State Route 601 bridge in Foustwell or add an additional 1.5 miles by putting in at State Route 403 bridge in Hollsopple. The take out is a little tricky. From Hollsopple, take State Route 601 toFoustwell. Make a left before the bridge that goes over the Stony onto SR 4039. Follow this road for approx. 2 miles and under Rt. 219 (4 lane). Just past Rt. 219 make a right onto Kaufman Church Road (church on corner). Follow for approx. 1.5 miles and make a right onto SR 4022 (Carpenters Park Road) at a stop sign. Follow over Rt. 219 (4 lane) and down to the Stony takeout (CarpentersPark).

Canoe Flat & Moving Water (2-Days) (16 May 2026)

This course will introduce you to equipment, safety and boat handling. Class will be conducted on flatwater Saturday and a gentle river on Sunday.

Instruction is offered solo (1 person in a canoe) or tandem (2 people in a canoe). The class will begin Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. at the Philadelphia Canoe Club, 4900 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia. Class will be conducted on the creek next to the Philadelphia Canoe Club on Saturday. On Sunday we will travel to a lake (to be determined) in the NJ Pine Barrens (about 1 hour drive from Philadelphia). Instructors will carry the boats and equipment but will not provide student rides.

Note: You may take just the first day only.

Note: For your comfort, bring a kneeling mat or wear knee pads.

Basic canoe instruction for the beginner on flatwater to prepare you for future classes.

This basic canoe course teaches essential flatwater paddling skills, safety, and maneuvering, designed for beginners to gain confidence and competence. We will focus on entering and exiting the canoe, basic strokes to control the boat and necessary gear.

Safety & Equipment: Proper life vest (PFD) fit, entering/exiting, and canoe mechanics.

Fundamental Strokes: Forward, backward, draw, and pry strokes.

Class will be conducted on the Wissahickon Creek next to the Philadelphia Canoe Club.

You may paddle solo or tandem. For tandem, both students need to be registered for the class.

No experience necessary. This course is held over a period of two weekends. You will be introduced to proper fit and use of equipment, strokes, maneuvers, assisted and self rescue, river reading and safety while building skills to paddle class two whitewater.

Class begins Friday Evening (May 29) which will include a mandatory orientation, equipment fitting, class assignments, meeting instructors and logistics for the class. Please wear clothing that may get soiled or wet as you will be sitting in a kayak during the fitting.

The first two-day weekend is held in Philadelphia on the Schuylkill River (May 30 & 31) followed by two days on the Lehigh River (June 6 & 7) in the Poconos.

Tent camping at Whitewater Challengers in the Poconos is included for Friday and Saturday nights (June 5 & 6). A dinner will be provided at the campground on Saturday evening, June 6 in the pavillion.

Please note: NO RV's permitted in the campground.

Successful completion of this course will allow students to participate in Philadelphia Canoe Club’s (PCC) Wednesday Night Flat Rock Trips on the Schuylkill River.

This course is held over a period of two weekends. You may choose solo or tandem canoe. You will be introduced to proper fit and use of equipment, strokes, maneuvers, assisted and self rescue, river features, water reading, and safety while building skills to paddle class two whitewater.

The first weekend will begin on still water and move into beginning rapids. The second weekend will be held on the Lehigh River in the Poconos. Tent camping only is included for Friday and Saturday nights at Whitewater Challengers Friday and Saturday nights (June 5 & 6). Dinner will be provided Saturday evening, June 6 in the pavilion. Please: No RV's.

Evening Session, May 29, is a mandatory orientation which includes meeting your instructors, logistics for the class and equipment and canoe fitting. If you plan to use your own boat for the class please bring it Friday Evening.

Class preparation: You will need closed toe, tight fitting, shoes (sneakers or river booties). Dress to be wet, bring two changes of clothes (no cotton) on the day of the class. A dry bag to bring extra clothes (such as fleece sweater, paddle jacket) with you in the boat. You will receive further instructions closer to the class with a list of things to bring for your comfort.

This class is part of the Philadelphia Canoe Club (PCC) Whitewater Kayaking Novice Training Class. It is designed as a step-up class for students who have taken novice training or have whitewater skills and experience; and wish to improve.

Prerequisites:

You must be comfortable on class II Whitewater (like the Lehigh River) and have taken the PCC Novice Training course or equivalent.

You must be able to perform the basic paddling skills taught in a novice course. You should be comfortable underwater while performing wet exits and familiar with "J" leans, hip snaps and braces.

Venue: Schuylkill River, Lehigh River, or appropriate river to be determined by instructor.

Note: You may take the first weekend only.

Lehigh Weekend: Tent camping only at Whitewater Challengers in the Poconos is included for Friday and Saturday nights (June 5 & 6). A dinner will be provided at the campground on Saturday evening, June 6 in the pavillion.

Basic River Kayak Paddling Strokes and Boat Control

This clinic will address both proper recreational kayak seating position and stroke form for good ergonomics, efficient paddling, and preserved stamina on the river. We will work on a solid forward stroke to power the kayak and a reliable backward stroke for slowing down, navigating moving water in twisty streams, and stopping the boat. We will be using sweep strokes to turn the boat and draw strokes to move it sideways as we efficiently move our kayaks through the waters by the Philadelphia Canoe Club.

KAYAK - Recreational (2-day) (13 Jun 2026)

INTRO RECREATIONAL KAYAKING - June 13 & 14, 2026

No experience necessary. This course is designed for students with little or no formal kayak training.

Please note: be prepared to get wet, you will be in the water for some of the safety exercises.

Day 1:

Location: On-the-water class at the Canoe Club.

Your lesson will include basic strokes, safety and rescue on flat and gently moving water. You will learn how to safely and easily get back into your kayak should you tip over and how to help your companions.

Day 2:

Location: NJ Pine Barrens

You will practice your skills from day one in the morning on the lake. The afternoon session on the river includes water reading and river features. You will practice controlling your kayak in faster currents and around river bends and turns.

This class will introduce you to whitewater canoeing. You will learn safety, how to properly use equipment and learn skills to confidently control a canoe in whitewater. Students will taught water reading, scouting, avoiding hazards and river running. It will be conducted on class 1-2 whitewater.

Please wear synthetic clothing, no cotton. Protect your feet, wear closed toe river shoes that will fit securely. You will learn how to safely exit your boat into deep water, swim to shore and various re-entries.

You will be receiving communication from your instructor before the class with clothing suggestions and things to bring.

Instruction is offered solo (1 person in a canoe) or tandem (2 people in a canoe).

You may take just the first day only.

Prys and draws are essential for good boat control and necessary for paddling straight, turning and side slipping. You will learn where to place you paddle and when to use these strokes for maximum control. We will also learn heeling, and high and low braces (a handy skill to learn to keep from capsizing).

You may use either a whitewater or flat water canoe. Tandem students must provide their own partner who is a registered student in the course.

Week of Rivers (North Carolina) (27 Jun 2026)

Week of Rivers is an annual event hosted by the Carolina Canoe Club. The event takes place at Smoky Mountain Meadows campground near Bryson City, North Carolina. Attendees are required to join the Carolina Canoe Club for about $20. The event is located near the Nantahala River and the Nantahala Outdoor Center. There are opportunities to paddle rivers of varying difficulty, from class 1 - 5, which makes the event very beginner friendly. In fact, most of the rivers near the campground, including the Nantahala, Hiawassee, and Tuckaseegee, are similar in difficulty to the Lehigh River. Advanced paddlers will also find plenty to do with the Ocoee, Tellico, Chattooga, Nolichucky and others within a few hours drive of camp.

The event starts each morning with a meeting at the pavilion where various trip leaders announce trips to different rivers. This is where beginners, or anyone new to the area, get the opportunity to meet new people and paddle rivers that are within their skill level with someone who knows the area. Additionally, training courses are always available at the Nantahala Outdoor Center.

Attendees should bring a pool toy to ride down Nantahala Falls at the annual event!

Ferries & Back Paddling

(Includes paddling backward using a reverse "J" stroke).

Ferrying is used to easily and quickly move from one side of the river to the other while avoiding obstacles (rocks, trees, other boaters or from being swept downstream). You can ferry facing downstream (back ferry) or facing upstream (front ferry). Back ferries are especially important in canoes because of their size. It's not necessary to turn the boat against the upstream current risking a capsize, just angle the boat a bit and paddle backward to avoid a problem. Knowing a good back stroke is essential for back ferries. We will practice paddling backward using a reverse "J".

You may use either a whitewater or flat water canoe. Tandem students must provide their own partner who is a registered student in the course.

Please bring a change of clothes. No sandals or open toes.

Eddie Turns and Water Reading

Eddies are calm areas formed by an obstruction in the moving water such as a rock or some other solid object. They are helpful places to rest, scout or decide how to maneuver around an problem spot downstream. We will examine "eddie lines" and how to successfully turn into one. We will also learn to "peel out" which is how an eddy is exited.

The goal of this class is to learn to good river judgement and to navigate rivers safely and efficiently. You will practice improving your ferries, peel outs, and water reading.

Canoe Clinic # 5: Basic Rescue Techniques (5:30 - 7:30 pm)

Class will be held on the Schuylkill River at the club. The clinic will cover basic rescue techniques that every canoeist should know for personal and group safety. You will learn how to rescue a capsized canoe and assist paddlers with their re-entry into the boat. You will also learn to use throw bags. (Bring your throw bag if you have one).

Be prepared to get wet, you will be in the water. Protect your feet, especially your toes, wear secure footwear. Closed water shoes or sneakers a must, no sandals, flip flops or crocs. Helmets required, the club will provide them if you don't have one.

You may choose a flatwater, whitewater or tandem canoe. Also, bring your own.

A canoe is a great way to take the family (including smaller kids) onto an affordable weekend adventure. The Philadelphia area offers many opportunities to enjoy rivers and lakes, be active, out in nature, and share time as a family. This introductory class offered by the Philadelphia Canoe Club will get your family on the water in a safe and fun way.

The program will begin on Friday Evening 6-8 p.m. providing a meet and greet time with instructors and families and preparation for Sunday's trip in the NJ Pine Barrens. We will discuss safety on and off the water, what to wear, and things to bring on Saturday's trip.

Learn:

Fundamental boat safety and proper use of gear

How to pack a canoe, keep gear dry, and in the boat

How to get in and out of a canoe

Confidently paddle a canoe using basic stokes and techniques.

Water reading and basic river features.

PCC will transport canoes and gear to the Pine Barrens on Sunday, July 27. Students are responsible for their own transportation.
