PCC Training Programs for 2008

The Philadelphia Canoe Club offers introductory instruction in both canoe and kayak,
for flatwater (calm lakes and streams),  whitewater, and ocean paddling.

No prior experience is required for participation in any of our introductory courses. 
All Philadelphia Canoe Club training courses are led by American Canoe Association certified instructors.
All Philadelphia Canoe Club courses  follow the American Canoe Association guidelines and curricula for
safety and training.

Rules for all Courses of Instruction
  1. All participants must sign an American Canoe Association (ACA) waiver (read in PDF format).
  2. Children must be 12 years of age.
  3. Children ages 12 through 17 must be accompanied by a paddling parent or guardian.

These courses are designed for students who have never taken formal canoe training. Lessons will include basic strokes and safety. An evening classroom session precedes our on-the-water lessons. To ensure your safety, attendance at each session is required. Training will be conducted in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. Tandem training is available. Solo training may be available as space permits. Reservations and payment must be received 5 days in advance of the course date.

This course is designed for beginning paddlers who use or plan to use recreational kayaks. The class will provide general information on kayaking and teach sufficient skills to handle a kayak safely in quiet, protected waters and small streams.  Lessons will be conducted on the Wading River and Pine Barrens in New Jersey. The lessons will include basic kayak strokes, launching and landing boats and practices for safe paddling. Reservations and payment must be received 5 days in advance of the course date. The Novice Whitewater Canoe course is suitable for anyone from beginners to advanced novices. This intensive course starts with an evening classroom session and is followed by four full days on two concurrent weekends. The course is intended to progress paddlers from flat moving water up to Class 2+ whitewater in a skillful and safe manner. To ensure your safety, attendance at each session is required; no exceptions will be allowed. Successful completion of this course will allow students to participate in future Class 2+ Club trips. Lessons will include ferries, eddy turns, peel outs, river reading, self and assisted rescues and river safety. Solo or tandem canoe training is available. Training will be conducted on appropriate local rivers (Schuylkill, Delaware, Lehigh, and Pine Barrens rivers); the exact rivers will be determined at the 1st session depending on local conditions. These one-day courses are designed for students with little or no formal kayak training. Lessons include basic strokes, maneuvers, assisted and self-rescue, river reading and safety. It is a basic introductory course intended to introduce students to the essentials of whitewater river kayaking. Successful completion of this course will allow students to participate in PCC's Thursday night Flatrock Trips on the Schuylkill River if qualified. DAVE JACKSON NESCOPECK TRAINING CAMP

This course is for advanced novice and intermediate paddlers. It is designed to tune up and improve your river paddling skills. Students must be able to competently execute wet exits, ferries, eddy turns and peel outs on Class II water. Students must have paddling experience on whitewater rivers such as the Lehigh and Schuylkill Rivers. Students must have appropriate cold weather paddling gear. Rolling Sessions-Indoor

INDOOR TRAINING - Winter of 2008

Winter indoor kayak rolling training (click for details) is conducted from November through March.
Winter indoor "Rodeo Skills in the Pool" may be held on some Saturday nights.

Thursday Night Flat Rock Practice
June through August


PCC offers both whitewater and flatwater practice sessions on the Schuylkill River on Thursday evenings in the summer. 
Meet at PCC between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m.  
An insurance fee of $10 is required from each participant once each summer. 
Club boats are available to rent, $10 per trip.

Whitewater Practice
To participate, a paddler must have successfully completed the PCC Novice Whitewater Training in Kayak or Canoe, or a PCC One Day Introduction to Whitewater Kayak Class.  The whitewater group will normally NOT return to the club in time for the potluck supper.

Flatwater Practice
To participate, a paddler must have successfully complete a beginner kayaking or canoeing course.  The practice run goes upstream and back in time for the potluck supper.

The Philadelphia Canoe Club (PCC) opens its doors to the public for a day of free demonstrations, canoe and kayak rides, used equipment sales, racing, music, food and entertainment, right on the bank of the Schuylkill River.
