Good Morning,

I want to paddle from Flat Rock to Kelly Drive.  I understand that there are some rapids below the dam.  What do I need to watch out for?  Are they really dangerous?

The landing on Kelly drive is just down river from PCC (look for the red roof...), right?  Any information is helpful.

Thanks so much!

Rapids below Flat Rock

There are class II rapids below the Flat Rock dam - that section extends downstream for about a mile - after which, it flattens out.

"Dangerous" is a relative term based on your experience with whitewater, boat/equipment, group size and current river level.

If you are alone (even if you have whitewater experience), I have just one word for you - DON'T!   The other variables mentioned are an education in themselves and, lacking in any of them for whitewater, would produce the same advice for that section.

To do this safely?  Take a class with PCC where you're given that education with experienced folks that love the sport.   See PCC's Training Schedule:  http://www.philacanoe.org/whitewater-training

Thanks for asking rather than just jumping in.  We really don't want to read about you in the paper ;-)

PS: I can't comment on the Kelly Drive take-out.  You do need to be with a PCC member in order to take out at the club.
