Description

Westecunk Creek is a little gem originating in the pine barrens and emptying into Little Egg Harbor, a few miles north of Tuckerton, in Ocean County, New Jersey. The put-in is below a spillway off Forge Road in the Stafford Forge Wildlife Management Area. Almost immediately after putting in, the creek passes under the Garden State Parkway and then cuts a narrow path through bushes and small trees often growing in the middle of the waterway. The course through the first mile or so is narrow and considerable maneuvering is required. Typically, a stop for lunch is made at the piers of an old concrete dam, which also serves a nice swimming hole. From here, the Westecunk meanders toward its rendezvous with tidewater, first passing under Route 9 and then cutting through a salt marsh. The take-out is at a sandy landing on the right at the head of the municipal piers on Dock Road (Bay Avenue). In season, there can be a problem with greenheads and biting insects at the take-out. Though a short trip (3.2 miles), the Westecunk is worth the effort.
